So we learn that 140,000 ballot papers were spoiled in the recent Scottish elections, representing 7% of the votes cast. The do-gooders are up in arms, decrying the supposed complexity of the ballot papers and condemning the decision to hold a first past the post election on the same day as one conducted under the single transferable vote system.Personally, I don’t see the problem. Each paper was very clearly marked with instructions on how to complete it. If you’re unable to read a string of monosyllabic words on the top of a ballot paper and act upon them, I less-than-humbly suggest that you’re too bloody stupid to vote.
